Lyon's traditional sectors of excellence have continually evolved and contribute to the international competitiveness of the metropolitan area in the fields of  biology and health (Lyon Biopôle - diagnostics and vaccines serving health protection, breakthroughs in personalized medicine), chemicals and environment (Axelera - Lyon Rhône-Alpes Association of Chemicals and Environment Industries), and transport systems (Lyon Urban Truck & Bus 2015).
